Patterns - Designer - Sackel, Barb
Barb Sackel is a noted quilt maker, designer, and teacher throughout the Finger Lakes region of Western New York. Many of her patterns are appropriate for beginners, and help develop basic skills that will enable quilters to move on to Barb’s more complex and demanding designs.

Barb’s 4-in-1 designs can be used in many different ways — to showcase a special focus fabric, or with appliqué, embroidery designs, cross-stitch, or even quilting motifs.

Today, I continue to design patterns for Little Quilt Company. I also design fabric for Andover Fabrics and work with Leo Licensing, which license my designs for nonfabric products. I have partnered with C&T Publishing, which have published several quilt pattern books featuring my folk art designs. I spend my summer days at our cabin in my awesome studio that my husband built for me last year. I spend my winter days at our home at the dining room table (which we only eat at once a year), exactly where I started years ago. I feel so grateful to be able to work at home. The kids have grown up so quickly that I’m glad to have been there for them along the way. Now that they are older and want a little more time to themselves they sometimes ask if I don’t want to get a ‘real job’ (in this case their ‘real job’ entails me leaving the house to go to work.)

I grew up in central Massachusetts in an area of old textile mill towns. Both my parents made things: my mom sewed a lot of her own clothes as well as clothes for four kids, and my dad made furniture. They were both very skilled—nothing ever looked homemade—and while they took pride in their work, they never considered themselves craftspeople or artists. They had careers (my dad was an engineer, my mom an educator with two masters degrees), but having grown up during the depression, they, like others of their generation, did not spend money if they could help it! When you needed something, you made it yourself.

I started making things when I was little, and never stopped. I studied graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design, and had more than a few different careers over the years. I finally patched together my many eclectic experiences when I created my business ten years ago.

Amélie Scott Designs - Designers: Christine and Katie.

Amélie (uh-MAY-lee) Scott Designs is a family-owned company with two designers who do the “artsy” stuff, and two geeky guys who handle pretty much everything else. Our designers love and appreciate many different styles of quilts, from traditional to art quilts. Their art backgrounds allow them to bring different techniques to quilt designs. Our patterns are easy to read and use because they are written by a seasoned educator with 13 years of experience and a professional writer with 20+ years of experience in marketing and technical writing. In addition to well-written instructions, our patterns are also loaded with diagrams to help.

Approximately eighteen years ago, Michele Scott decided to take up a little hobby of quilting to pass her time. Like every other self-respecting “quilt-a-holic”, it quickly became a passion. Machine quilting was of particular interest to her. Working with decorative threads could sometimes be frustrating, so she spent countless hours developing strategies to work with them more effectively.

Her main goal as an educator is to conduct positive upbeat classes that teach solid techniques and give all levels of quilters new confidence. For the past 10 years, she has taught at many quilt guilds and shows across the United States and Canada. In addition, she is on the faculty of Quilt University, providing the quilting community with a variety of classes for quilters online.

At the same time that Michele began lecturing and teaching, she began working with McCall’s Quilting and Quick Quilts magazines. Over the past 10 years, she’s had over 60 quilts published in their magazines, along with several articles in Quilter’s Home Magazine. Michele’s book, Bobbin’ Quiltin’ and Fusin’ Fun was debuted by AQS at the International Quilt Market in Houston, Fall 2011.
