Patterns - Designer - Oft, Kay
Kay Oft, teacher, designer, and longarm quilter, shares her passion for the art of quilting with students across the United States. Learning to quilt at a young age from her grandmother and mother, it seemed only natural for Kay to pursue her dream career in the field of quilting after retiring from teaching school thirty-two years.

No matter whether the topic at hand is piecing or quilting, Kay enjoys sharing her love of the craft and art of quilting with beginning and advanced students alike. She encourages them to enjoy and find inspiration as they express themselves in the creative process. Kay teaches her students to hone their skills as they master a variety of techniques, and to relax as they celebrate the world-wide community of quilters honoring the legacy of our ancestors in this treasure chest of unlimited possibilities called quilting.

I started Cotton Way in 1990 and can’t believe it has been almost 20 years of designing, cutting, sewing, writing patterns, Quilt Market and lots of late nights. I designed dolls for the first 10 years, including a series of dowel legged dolls called Long Leggins. Keep in mind this is when dolls were all the rage! Now I really enjoy designing quilts. My favorite at the moment is our new Dot-To-Dot quilt. Inspiration comes from many things, but a lot of times it comes from events in my life such as weddings, grandchildren, graduations, birthdays, etc. I also love to look at decorating magazines for new colors and trends. Chocolate is a must in the designing process! I have to admit I am completely hooked on M&Ms.

When I’m not busy designing, I am most likely with my husband, five children and five adorable grandchildren. They keep me very busy. We enjoy spending time at the lake in the summer, and in Idaho there is lots of snow in the winter to snowmobile and play in. We recently took a trip to South Africa to pick up our son Ryan who has been there for 2 years. I love to decorate and redecorate our home, and typically take on more projects than I can finish. A few other favorites: the color red (I can’t get enough of it lately!), taking pictures of my family, scrapbooking and the beautiful view from my sewing studio. As long as I am not cooking or shopping (except for fabric of course) life is pretty good.

All my quilts are developed from original designs. I like both playing with designs and figuring out the pattern instructions. Most of my quilts, and especially my landscapes, are inspired by my visual impressions of everyday life and nature.

Through the years I experimented with many different art mediums, painting, stain glass, even pottery and stone sculpture – but not until later in 1991 did I discover fabric and quilting and quickly adopted it as my favorite way to express myself. I love the linear element of composition and the tangible, touchable result that quilting has to offer. I enjoy all the aspects of quilt-making: designing, piecing, layering, quilting, and finishing.
