Patterns - Designer - Mabutas, Holly
My name is Holly Mabutas and I’m an artist and owner of a web-based rubber stamp and quilt pattern business, eat cake graphics. I also build websites, create logos and other artwork for clients, and have collaborated on some book illustrations. In general I am an all around artsy girl, if it looks fun I’ll probably want to try it… or at least buy a book about it… maybe even some supplies in the hopes of someday trying it (hence the problem with my creative space spilling over). I live in California with my husband, our two dogs and four cats who know how to lounge really well.

Like many quilters, I have always loved fabric! I learned to sew when I was nine years old and began doing hand embroidery and needlework as a teenager. In 1982, I learned to quilt and it quickly became one of my favorite hobbies. Classes from nationally known teachers followed, and in 1993, I decided to share my enthusiasm for quilting with others through teaching. My greatest satisfaction comes from introducing new people to quilting. Soon I was designing my own patterns for quilts that look difficult to make but are really easy for beginners. In 2002, I named my business Calico Carriage Quilt Designs and began presenting lectures and workshops for quilt guilds and shops. I hope I have the opportunity to meet many of you in my travels.

I’m a designer and a teacher, but I’m always a quilter first! I was absolutely thrilled when two of my quilts were juried into the 2004 International Quilt Association show at Quilt Festival in Houston. That same year, another of my quilts was accepted into the Hoffman Challenge, an annual traveling exhibit sponsored by Hoffman California Fabric. In 2005, I was invited to California to tape an episode of Simply Quilts for HGTV, and later that year, quilting became my full-time passion when I retired from a long career as a dental hygienist. It’s been a dream come true ever since.

There isn’t a word in our vocabulary that can bring more heartfelt feelings than the word “Quilt”. We all wish we had one, love the one that we have or yearn to make one. The pride and passion that I felt after finishing my first quilt is still in my heart. I wanted to bring that feeling to others and show them that they too could share in this accomplishment and pride of making a handmade quilt from the heart. I had decided that the quilt patterns were too complicated and intimidating for me. Therefore, if I could write and describe this "new to me" technique of using an "On Point" fusible grid in a way that I would understand, I could sell it to others thinking the same way as myself. We are so busy in our lives, yet we still yearn to give homemade gifts. My company will continue to write patterns that will make the non-quilter a believer in themselves and give the traditional quilter a beautiful quilt that is finished in a fraction of the time of a pieced quilt. What matters most is the pride and accomplishment of finishing a project and feeling a passion while you are doing it. Little did I know that my passion for writing, teaching and traveling to share with others was so strong that it changed my life.

My mom taught me to sew when I was young, I get my love of fabric from her. I’ve been quilting since I became a stay at home mom 11 years ago. I’ve been designing quilts for several years and have been prompted by friends and family to put them into patterns. So, here they are and I hope you enjoy sewing them as much as I do creating them.
